My grandfather. Family photo.
Once in a while I do love to post family photos. I think this one is precious, but then this is because my grandfather was the sweetest person and he loved me dearly. I miss him so very much. He was a soldier, a volunteer fireman, and an excellent craftsman. His hobby was making straw baskets and he made *many*. He taught me how too, when I was around 8!
He also had orchards and made his own cider. And drank much of it. lol

I can see why. Those are precious indeed. Funny how they may look good to anyone but to family they are *extra* special. A bit melancholic to say but pictures are only a fraction of who the person was, and those who never knew them will never know how great they were. Ha, mortality is a *bitch*. :p

When we were clearing out my Mum’s bungalow I found there honeymoon 35mm transparencies which I don’t remember seeing before. It’s funny you never really think of your parents being young and in love, when Mum was in hospital she asked when I cleared out her things when I found a pile of letters tied up not to read them but destroy them, feeling a bit cheeky I asked whether they were “naughty” and she blushed and said no, just romantic. Sadly I couldn’t find them before her funeral as I wanted to put them in her coffin, when I eventually found them they were tied up with ribbon and no I didn’t read them although I was very tempted.

Why not read them? They are you…you know? You are a part of them. I think you should not feel guilty reading them.
edit: I missed the part when she said for you not to read them. It’s up to you really. If that was a her wish…

Lovely photo and what a great name! Did you colour the picture in Photoshop or was it hand coloured at the time? I love pics of people with bicycles!
Yes, the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is a very special one. I miss all four of mine, particularly my mum’s parents.

I am not in possession of the original. This one came from my cousin who lives in France and has access to the originals. He did not temper with it, this much I know. I thought 1945 but it may have been the 50s if the earliest colored photos are from that decade, although he looks quite young here.

From the colouring it looks like one of the earlier Kodachrome pictures that and the natural fading with time.

I couldn’t have told you when Kodachrome started but I seem to remember seeing some old photos when I was a kid. My Dad had a photographic studio and they used to hand colour certain pictures as colour pictures were still in their early stages and expensive as well as difficult to produce on a small scale. My first job was in the darkrooms for a large print firm and even in the early 70’s producing colour photographs was still very hit and miss.

This is definitely hand coloured, so your guess of 1945 fits in. What a shame it isn’t yours, but lovely of your cousin to send you scans.

But not scannerless if you want copies? I seem to be the only one in my family who is interested in the photos of past generations so hold many that are technically my mum’s but which she is happy for me to keep. She says I look after them better than she would and she is so right!

No scanner. My father doesn’t even own a computer. lol. He’s in his seventies and never caught up! I live in a hurricane and flood prone area -a source of anxiety for a collector such as myself.
My family pictures are safer where they are until he gives them to me. My parents live 800 miles away so I don’t visit often and when I do it’s not practical to bring the desktop and scanner. lol
