This young gent with a hint of a smile looks relaxed on this low chair. It makes him look tall. I’m not sure what the backdrop is supposed to represent, maybe a fireplace. The checkered flower design to the right is a mystery, a creative wall decoration most likely.

I would say definitely a fireplace. It is a funny idea to pose someone of this size on such a low chair and the bunched-up rug seems to be an odd choice, too. He has a gorgeous face. Just lovely to gaze into his soulful eyes!

He seems like a nice guy :). And yes, it all seems a bit thrown together. Usually studio portrait settings are much neater. And the chair looks old and tattered!

This was most likely taken outside or in a makeshift studio, as tintypes were generally not taken using a flash. They were a cheap alternative to photos on paper and flash photography was very expensive at the time.

Hadn’t finished that comment and away it went! Anyway, natural light was necessary and tintypes were often taken by itinerant photographers. I guess the shabbiness of the props underlines that, if I have that right!
