1/6th plate tintype. c. 1880’s. Private Collection.
A close-up portrait of two collarless gents smoking cigars. The one on the right looks like he shouldn’t be messed with! By comparison, his friend looks much more approachable. And Mr. Tough has his hand on his friend’s shoulder, a protective and dominant gesture? He comes off as the leader of the two.
They didn’t bother to change into better garbs either, a rip is prominent on the pants. Once again, what their lives were like is mystery, yet one can’t help but wonder.

Have you cleaned this up for the post Caroline. I had a visceral response to this one, like seeing an image of a long lost friend. You have a great eye for images. I love your blog!

I clean up all my images. This one was OK with not too many scratches. It was part of a lot I got a while back. I think I’ve seen so many images of the period I sometimes have dreams set in the period. LOL

Strangely, just last night I had a dream in the 1950s in which a lot of shoes and Marilyn Monroe featured. I think it was due in part to sorting through a whole lot of 50s and 60s booth pics, yesterday. I love the power of a photo to transport one to a different a, but it has never emerged in a dream before.

I wonder what Marilyn was doing in your dream! I could go on talking about dreams, that’s a fascinating topic.

I think MM turned up as I had made a comment to a film literate friend about her, in relation to Some Like It Hot and was gob smacked that she hadn’t even heard of it let alone seen it. I still haven’t recovered from the shock!
