Victorian man of Illinois

Cabinet card.

1880s-1890s Cabinet card.

The higher the collar, the higher you are in society…? :)

I picture him spending long evenings in the family library, in the flickering light of a gas lamp reading book after book and newspapers while debating politics over a glass of whiskey. What a proper, educated gentleman is supposed to do.

Seven friends. RPPC. Private Collection.

Another group from the 1910s-20s. These friends were in a studio, the standing ones posed by height. Not much to say here, apart that groups do stir up the imagination!

(And I’m not sure I like the new WordPress set-up. I can’t figure out how to post a link to the larger image once on my draft. Sorry.)

1910s Mankato fraternity brothers

Well dressed handsome fraternity brothers proudly displaying their banner. Big boy in the middle has a ribbon on his coat.

Ever wondered why some suits still have a buttonhole on the left lapel? There you have it. This piece of jewelry has gone by the wayside but boutonnieres are still widely used on special occasions.

1870s gaunt teen from Valparaiso, IN

This teen has beautiful features yet he appears frail; he’s swimming in his collar. Was he recovering from an illness, or losing weight from sickness? If he were naturally this gaunt I think his collar would better fit him.

Photographer: G. Whipple. Valparaiso, Indiana.

Are you a doll too?

What an interesting French romance postcard! The man is the same as on these two postcards, but I’m not sure about the woman. Between them is a porcelain doll she is using to touch the man’s neck. The doll itself is giving her a side glance!

This is the first time I see a doll prop on these, and I absolutely love how the photographer used it! It’s a bit surreal, almost as if the doll is alive too.
