1/6th plate tintype. Private Collection.
This is one of those tintypes that makes me smile. The gentleman looks so victorian with his mustache, but the backdrop here’s the real star and the reason why I added this one to my collection. It’s just so quaint!
The backdrop of the house with the tree looks right out of a fable. I almost can see Red Riding Hood prancing out of the front porch. And the made-up fence with the ivy pot brings it all together and gives the whole image a 3D effect. Here I’m not sure if the gentleman is wearing a collar at all.
All in all, the photographer’s artist gave his backdrop and props a lot of thought, and it came out wonderful!

I also like the different backdrops used by the photographers, I have a few with a seaside backdrop which look quire amusing, I was told that some studios had several backdrops on large rolls in order to suit the occasion.
The collar does look a little strange, one would expect a “gentleman” to wear a collar and tie, if he was a “worker” he might not wear a collar but one would expect to see the stud at the front. But I agree a very nice addition to any collection.

Oh, the seaside ones are the best! Some are so campy. Yes, they had artists paint the backdrops on canvases. There’s a wonderful tintype on eBay of a photographer and artist team posing with their backdrops and brushes, and camera. So SO awesome. It also goes for $3,500….UNREAL.

He is quite dreamy isn’t he. I’d be thrilled if he asked me to dance at the ball!
