These two look effortlessly elegant. Harold and Woods posed in their stiff collars and loose suits for a formal portrait. Hopefully they did their mama proud!

Their collars always look as if they aren’t really part of the shirt, just hovering round their necks. The poor maids of the period often wore a similar style collar with their uniforms along with the white starched cuffs, must have been very uncomfortable to work in but then appearance was all 😉

Uncomfortable, but then you didn’t have to wash your shirt as often, and since that was done by hand it was a small price to pay. lol

Especially if he has a nice “little woman” or “Tweeny” to do his laundry, did America have Tweenies? I have an interesting book about servants and in 1902 Queen Alexandra invited 10,000 “maids of all work” of London to tea parties across the capital to mark the Coronation, the parties were between 10th July to 2nd August 1902. They were given an extra half day off work and were able to wear their own clothes rather than their usual uniform of cap and apron.

It’s a general term used here for the very junior maid, they had all the jobs that no one else wanted to do
