Toward You

Vers Toi postcard. Private Collection.

Vers Toi postcard. Private Collection.

A beautiful pink postcard of a (very young) French soldier reaching up to his beloved. This one was unposted.

Toward you, I always turn to like I turn to the sun

Of which bright rays, warm us the same.

Five boys, no girl

The mother looks like one tough woman. You’d have to be to raise this bunch! She looks proud and severe, holding a bible in her hands. Oh no, you did not dare disobey mother in this family.

I’m sure she would have liked to have a daughter too, but that wasn’t part of God’s plan now, was it?

The father looks mellow in comparison. I’m not sure what he’s holding in his hand. It looks like the back of a cabinet card.

The brothers don’t look far apart from each other. I like how the photographer arranged this family by height, taking the photo horizontally with a white backdrop and the parents in the middle.

Photographer: Clinkenbeard. Palace Photo Car. Blank back.

1920 Eddie Wilkinson of Los Angeles

There are people who don’t write their info, and then there are some like Eddie here. He was thorough writing down his full name on both sides with his complete address. He wrote the picture’s date not once or twice, but three times!

An early photo strip

Private Collection.

Private Collection.

A cute photo strip circa I’d say 1905-1910, of a curly haired gent having fun playing with the concept. The shots are oval which I find interesting. This one measures 1″ 1/4 by 4″.

Candid portrait of young rural worker

Snapshot of worker in field. Private Collection.

4.5″ x 6″ snapshot of young rural worker. Private Collection.

I love this candid portrait. Of course I tend to say this about every picture in my collection, but this young worker was captured on a field, his clothes tattered and his hair greasy, and I doubt it was from pomade…yet in his humanity he’s absolutely gorgeous.
