Soldier and Sweetheart

Soldier and Sweetheart. Snapshot. Private Collection.

Leaning into his beautiful girlfriend this soldier had a reason to smile. They match, don’t they? Her glossy brunette hair matches his, and below that tightly pleated and floor length skirt her shoes match his boots too. She’s also seated with crossed legs like him.

My guess is this was an American couple from the 1920’s.

Russell on a tricycle with friend

This snapshot made me laugh. Was Russell trying to be funny, or was this his ride? I want to think he was joking around posing on a small tricycle. His friend (whose name I can’t make out) seems to be enjoying the fact he’s not the one on that contraption, he’s leaning on Russell’s shoulder from his adult size bike and seems quite ok with his own ride.

Toward You

Vers Toi postcard. Private Collection.

A beautiful pink postcard of a (very young) French soldier reaching up to his beloved. This one was unposted.

Toward you, I always turn to like I turn to the sun

Of which bright rays, warm us the same.

There are people who don’t write their info, and then there are some like Eddie here. He was thorough writing down his full name on both sides with his complete address. He wrote the picture’s date not once or twice, but three times!

1927 Joseph smoking a long pipe on a precarious bridge

1930s snapshot. Private Collection.

1927 Joseph Bertrand on bridge. Private Collection.

Rule #1: no matter where you are or on what, always look cool.

Joseph looks like he was on a trail bridge desperately in need of repair. Bet he checked the rail first before leaning against it. He’s wearing a panama hat and a suit with ‘plus fours’. The breeches extended 4 inches more below the knee than traditional knickerbockers, hence the name. They were very popular in the twenties as sportswear, especially for golf. Swing dancers adopted them in the 30s and 40s. He’s wearing plain white socks here but ‘plus fours’ popularized a slew of patterned socks like argyles.

This is a small picture, 2″ 1/4 x 3″ 1/4. The man is IDed on the back, the picture dated June 1927.
