This cap has a few stories to tell

Sailor close-up portrait snapshot. 1940’s. Private collection.

Another photogenic sailor, with the handy comb in the breast pocket -you know he had just used for this shot- and a cap atop his blonde head that has definitely seen better days!

Although it may seem that way, I don’t specifically look to collect sailors. But this is a nice close-up, ladies and gentlemen.

The bowler hatted benefactor

RPPC vignette. Private Collection.

RPPC vignette. Private Collection.

This is one of the first RPPCs I got. I had to have at least one vignette portrait of a gent in a bowler. This one wrote to a lady named Roxie. He made good on a promise and gave her something -with the postcard picture of himself- that would help her father ‘next spring when he plants corn’. What it was is lost to time, but this seems like it was a thoughtful message and nice gesture. And maybe getting into the good graces of the father does help. :)

U.S.S.Nevada sailor Robert Flowers

rppc-uss-nevada-sailor-bob-flowers

U.S.S. Nevada sailor Robert “Bob” Flowers. RPPC. 1910’s-20’s. Private Collection.

The U.S.S Nevada was launched in 1914. This sailor with an air of confidence may have been one of the first to have manned it.

During the Great War the ship was based in Bantry Bay, Ireland, to protect the supply convoys sailing to and from Great Britain.

RPPC: CYKO. 1904-1920s.

A 1930’s Portrait

1930s-portrait-young-man

A high school portrait for the yearbook maybe? This is a 4″ x 6″ on thick paper with a blank back.

Ah, the 30’s…starting with the Great Depression and ending in war…I hope this dapper young gentleman survived those tumultuous times. The 30’s weren’t exactly the best decade to be coming of age.

Why not a silk butterfly tie?

RPPC. Private Collection.

Teen with butterfly tie. RPPC. Private Collection.

Here this young man wore a silk tie with butterflies under what appears to be an opal or moonstone tie stack. Also the shirt has a nice front pleat below the low rounded collar. Sometimes I wish I could see these pictures in color. I bet the tie was a nice pop to the overall look.

RPPC: AZO 1904-1918.
