1850s moody Victorian young man in Union case.

Private Collection

1860s tintype of young moody man. Private Collection

Excuse the somewhat terrible iPhone photo. The actual tintype looks so much better. The case has a lovely leather backing and measures 3″ 1/4 by 3″ 1/2. The picture is very sharp and this photo doesn’t do it justice; there is no shadow to the left and it misses out on all the lovely details of the hat, bow and brocade waistcoat.

This young sitter has a very moody expression and almost looks disdainful -something that is more easily seen with the naked eye. The hat with the side flaps is interesting. He’s wearing a large bowtie worn over the coat. This was most likely taken anywhere between the mid 1850s and 1860s.

Definitely a favorite of the period. This one came from an antique dealer in Alabama.

American Gothic

The American countryside couple. RPPC. Private Collection.

Circa 1910 American couple. RPPC. Private Collection.

This picture reminds me of the famous painting done twenty years later in 1930. This beautiful couple is on farm ground with a wagon and horse peeking to the left and another wagon, barn and house to the right (I see the barn being red). The man is dressed in a light colored Norfolk suit, and his wife is in a simple white cotton or linen dress with the large buttons going down the skirt. She’s wearing square buckle shoes and he the ever-fashionable Victorian boots with the side buttons.

A beautiful picture of a couple living in the American countryside.

J.H. Kent CDV of little Victorian boy behind sofa

J.H.Kent CDV. Private Collection.

Circa 1890. J.H.Kent CDV. Private Collection.

Another wonderful J.H. Kent photograph added to the fold. This time a CDV of a toddler boy placed behind a sofa with his hands over the back. I love how plain everything is so the focus is exclusively on the sitter, and I love that one of the buttons of the jacket is undone. No matter how still the pose seems, this is still an active little kid!

‘He never knew’

What did this gentleman in fedora not know? How well the camera likes him? He seemed to know as much. Perhaps he didn’t know how well a lady liked him. ;)

Handsome Lucien

Family picture.

1940s Family picture.

This is in fact my cousin’s grandfather posing with his hands behind the back, Lucien Guillaume in a dapper suit. My cousin looks so much like him, and his name is Guillaume too.
