Blue collar cigar smoking duo

tintype-affectionate-duo-on-chairs

1/6th plate tintype. c. 1880’s. Private Collection.

A close-up portrait of two collarless gents smoking cigars. The one on the right looks like he shouldn’t be messed with! By comparison, his friend looks much more approachable. And Mr. Tough has his hand on his friend’s shoulder, a protective and dominant gesture? He comes off as the leader of the two.

They didn’t bother to change into better garbs either, a rip is prominent on the pants. Once again, what their lives were like is mystery, yet one can’t help but wonder.

What a Fine Time

1880s-90s 1/6th plate tintype. Private Collection.

Together we laughed, we cried, we played. We danced!  And we drank, much more than you. We knew all the fine people too.

We tasted joys and pains, early springs and rains. We mourned lost lives, so fragile, more often than you.

Our time did come to an end. We are gone now, that’s true. Of all we felt remains a plated memory once in these hands, for you.

Ah, but what a fine time we had, what a fine time. We made it through! Say, will we meet again, at the call of a baby’s coo?

Two very well dressed, affectionate buddies with big smiles. I never get tired of these ;)

Cuffed and Affectionate

Unidentified man with leather cuff and Ed Huskell. RPPC. Private Collection.

Of course, what I noticed first is the greatly detailed leather cuff. Was it purely a fashion statement, or did it have a more practical use? The unidentified man with the cuff is posing with his left arm on Ed Huskell (or Hushell)’s shoulder. The pose is casually affectionate with Ed leaning into his friend.

Ed is IDed on the back as the husband of Stella, and father of  Beatrice (1912), Lonnie (1913), Flo Etta (1915), Phyllis (1917) and David McKeith (1924).

McKeith does seem like a strange choice for a middle name.

Tom and George Robinson in straw boaters

Tom & George Robinson. RPPC. Private Collection.

These two brothers or cousins are IDed on the back. Tom on the left looks neutral enough, but George has this ‘piss off!’ look on his face.

I would love to find more formal portraits from the 1910s with the sitters wearing their straw boater hats but, weirdly enough, I don’t come across many. Here these two match with their hats on with different band designs and colored bowties. Nice shirts too, especially George’s with the pleats. I love the look, but somebody needed to tell him to cool off a bit. :)
