1910s young man with the upturned collared shirt

He has his collar upturned and it looks like an all-in-one dress shirt + collar. This gent was an early adopter.

And there’s something of a defiant sneer behind this half smile. I’m willing to bet his father of the more conservative, detachable starched collar camp didn’t like that his son wore those shirts.

I can hear the father say “Get this travesty of a shirt off and get a proper collar! What is this world coming to? You look undone!”, to which this young gent replied something like “You and your stuffy old ways! I’ll wear what I want!”

Think I’m exaggerating? :) For us today this may seem like a ridiculous issue, but there was an uproar over the adoption of collared shirts into the mainstream. They were thought to make a man not look like a proper gentleman. Oh, the decaying of society! The British were especially against this trend coming from America. Surprised much? Well, they lost this battle.

A 1920s smiling young man and his harnessed dog

A mean looking harness this Pit is sporting! But the dog looks like it’s smiling as big as its proud owner!

My husband says it’s not a real Pit. I replied that some breeds from a century ago are not the exact same ones you see today. Traits have become exaggerated through controlled breeding. This may have been a part Pit, not an expert, but that’s something to think about.

I’ll give you one more chance!

Boss and worker RPPC.

This scene looks like a boss berating his young worker, pointing a warning (and inked stained) finger at him. Yet, since this is staged the well dressed chap doesn’t look too mad, unless this is him hiring him and telling him ‘don’t disappoint me!’.

I was outbid on this one, pity! :)

Coming of Age II

Austrian boy with very high collar & cigarette. CDV. Personal Collection.

A thick late period CDV of a dapper Austrian boy. He’s wearing a high collar and white tie that together elongate his silhouette. His jacket’s wrinkled but his gentlemanly appearance is complete with a straw boater hat, buttonhole jewelry chain and a cane tucked on his arm.

The backdrop is plain and looks like a painted room corner.

This card reminds me of the German one.

1890s proud young man with a wide open wingtip collar

Cabinet card of young man. Private Collection.

This fellow with the proud expression and very dark eyes is wearing a wide open version of the wingtip collar with a thin bowtie. Amazing how many variations of collars and bowties/cravats and ties existed…Men’s fashion was all about the accessories. This is a nice card in great condition, and with uncommon grooves on the edges.
